Tropic is a small town in Garfield County, southern Utah, nestled near the southern edge of Bryce Canyon National Park. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Paiute people, who lived in the region for centuries.
European-American settlers began arriving in the late 19th century, primarily Mormon pioneers seeking farmland and new communities. Tropic was officially settled in 1891 and incorporated as a town later. Its name reflects the optimism of early settlers, who hoped the area’s climate would support productive agriculture despite its high desert location.
The town’s economy historically relied on agriculture, especially livestock and crops suited to the semi-arid climate, including hay and small grains. Its proximity to Bryce Canyon brought tourism into the local economy in the 20th century, with visitors often passing through Tropic en route to the national park. Today, Tropic maintains a small, tight-knit community and serves as a gateway for tourists exploring southern Utah’s red rock landscapes.

Along scenic Highway 12 in the little town of Tropic, Utah you will find the Bryce Canyon Inn. Established in 2004, the Inn started out with two rows of cabins — welcoming explorers to come stay on the quiet side of Bryce Canyon National Park. Today, the Inn has grown to feature modern cabins and family suites and in 2025 was named Tripadvisor's Traveler's Choice.
The Inn has been owned by the same family since 2006. We take pride in our clean and cozy spaces, and hope you will enjoy your stay with us.

Located just outside of Tropic, beneath the rim of Bryce Canyon, sits our horse motel, arena, and dry camping spots. If you are roughing it, this is a great place to set up your tent. If you have a horse or mule that needs a place to stay, check out our boarding area and arena.
If you want to ride but forgot your horse or mule, Mecham Outfitters and Guide Service is available to take you through some of the prettiest country you'll ever see.

After a long day of hiking, get the Bryce Canyon red dirt out of your clothes without traveling far from your cabin. At Bryce Canyon Inn, we offer a convenient onsite laundry facility for our guests.
While you're waiting why not grab a drink at our onsite coffee shop or a bite to eat at our critically celebrated The Pizza Place?

Bryce Canyon Coffee Co. serves the best hot beverages in the area. Our onsite coffee shop was established in 2013 as a cozy space where travelers and locals alike can mingle.
We serve locally roasted coffee including espresso, classic drip, lattes, cappuccinos, and cold brew, as well as smoothies and other flavored specialty drinks. Guests can also enjoy our delicious locally baked Mr. B’s banana bread.

Our onsite restaurant, The Pizza Place, serves by far the best pizza in the Bryce Canyon area, perhaps even all of Southern Utah. Here's what Forbes had to say:
"Okay, so the state may not be known for its pies, but The Pizza Place has been on a mission since its 1990 opening to change that way of thinking one delicious margherita slice at a time. With a crust sitting comfortably between thin and thick, the pizza allows you to take bites without toppings tumbling all over. The generously stuffed calzones and Uinta Brewing Co.’s crisp Hoodoo beer also make impressive statements."

Step off the beaten path and dive into a hidden gem of Utah’s red-rock country at Mossy Cave. Just a short hike leads you to a magical waterfall framed by lush moss, twisting canyon walls, and sparkling pools—a perfect blend of adventure and serenity.
The trail follows a creek and offers a mix of sandy paths and rock formations, making it an enjoyable stop for a casual walk, a bit of exploration, or some peaceful time in nature without needing to venture far from town.
